You Are What You Hear

What's on your playlist? As worshipers our first obligation is to represent God on this earth through our spoken and unspoken testimony. When people hear our words they should be impacted in the same way by our actions. The true questions we should be asking ourselves are: Are we making the difference? Are we showing the world that we have been set apart? The people in our lives and in our midst will come to know us by what we put out there. I challenge you, if you have not done so yet to grab your ipod or mp3 and look through your playlist. The one thing I must say, the one thing that saddens my heart is seeing worshipers who live two lives. They worship God with their mouths, but their hearts are far from Him and their playlists filled with Taylor Swift thinking that just because her music is relaxing and bubbly, this makes it ok to listen to. Ultimately, as I tell my girlies who I teach this to, I simply present the truth revealed to me by God at age 16, confirmed by the word of God, but it is up to them to take what they want. I cannot force something into someone's heart but the word does say that "we will know the truth and the truth will set us free." (John 8:32) What you hear makes you who you are. What we fill our hearts with will come out and this is exactly why God warns us to guard our hearts. At the same time we invite Jesus into our hearts we also invite Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Colbie Caillat, or Linkin Park? Take it from the girl who experienced this first leads to nothing...simply emptiness  And how can I pour out life into others through worship if I myself am dead on the inside from what I have filled my own heart with? We cannot change, but again Jesus says, (Matthew 19:26) “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  So...some may be wondering how to tell what is good and pleasing to the Lord and what is not. Below you will see three categories which I am sharing with you all from what I have been taught in Psalmist School. Hold tight to these truths and begin to shine and truly worship the Lord because it is more than a's a lifestyle.

1.) Pagan- Music that condones sin, distorted, filled with sex, drugs, or witchcraft

2.) Secular- Earthly music, with human aspects, not spiritual

3.) Spiritual- Music that connects us with God, that elevates and feeds our spirit

Now that you've seen the's time to classify where your music falls. Examples of pagan music would be Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. Examples of secular music would be Tercer Cielo and some Toby Mac songs. And examples of spiritual music would be Kari Jobe and Jesus Culture. With that said, what we should let our lives be filled with is spiritual music because we want our spirit man to be stronger than our flesh. Pagan music should not be in our playlists at all because we are called to change the world, not to conform to it. If we have been forgiven of our sin because it separated us from God, then why fill our hearts once more with the things that caused us to fall? It took me 16 years to see this even though I grew up in a christian home and if I could say one thing to encourage anyone it would be that I finally found my identity in Christ when I listened and obeyed the voice of my shepherd who gave his life so that I could have mine. Secular music is not bad to listen to  because it depicts the life we go through here on earth (a love between man and women or struggles) but if we are going to fill our playlists with it I recommend you search for christian artists who make this kind of music. "Cinderella" by Steven Curtis Chapman would be a perfect example that you might like to play at your wedding or birthday that was made by a believer. It's important to see who makes the music you hear because what the artist carries in his heart he passes on through his song from his heart to yours. We will be known by our fruit and if most of who we are is flesh instead of spirit then there's a problem worth looking at. If we are mostly listening to secular music then we will be resembling chickens pecking the things of the ground, while God has called us to soar like eagles. If you haven't made the change I encourage you to seek God, hear His voice, and act on it because the purpose for your life is greater than the mud around us that tries to consume us on a daily basis. Make the difference. Stand out! And I leave you with these scriptures to feed your heart, soul, and spirit:

(Ephesians 5:6-20) Don’t be fooled by those who try to excuse these sins, for the anger of God will fall on all who disobey him.  Don’t participate in the things these people do. For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.  It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret. But their evil intentions will be exposed when the light shines on them, for the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, “Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don't act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do. Don't be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts. And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
